Joseph’s Shawl

Yarn: Lion’s Brand Homespun – uses 3 skeins of base color yarn and assorted colored scrap yarns.  The scrap yarn pieces need to be at least 8 yards long for each row.  Enough scrap yarn is needed for about 63 rows.  Colors that work well for the base are white, black, charcoal or tan.

Size N crochet hook

ch – chain

dc – double crochet

sc – single crochet

sl st – slip stitch

sp – space

With base color, ch 60, turn.  Sc in each ch across, ch 3 and turn.

Each row will be worked using 2 strands of yarn – one the base color and the other the scrap yarn.  Do not cut yarn unless specified.  The unused yarn will be carried underneath the stitches.

Ch 3 counts as 1st dc throughout, dc in next 2 st changing color on last dc.  (To change color, work last dc to within one step of completion, hook scrap yarn and draw through the 2 loops on hook.)  Dc in next 3 st, carrying unused color under the dc.  (Note: Do not pull the unused yarn too tight, as it will bunch the stitches.  Do not let the unused yarn get  too loose, as it will cause loops in the shawl.)  Change color on last dc.  Continue working 3 dc pattern across the row alternating the two colors.

At end of row, change to base color on last dc.  Cut scrap yarn leaving about a 5” tail.  Ch 3 and turn.

Continue working rows in 3 dc pattern with different colors until shawl is about 63” long (about 63 rows).  Work unused yarn and tail from previous row under dc.

At end of last dc row, ch 1 and turn.  Sc across, ch 1 and turn.  Sl st in each sc.  Finish off.  Weave in any loose ends.

Add fringe.  Fringe can be made from the base color only or a combination of the base color and the scrap yarn.
